Lawns & Gardens Type Of Grass
If your grass feels harsh under bear foot and not at all soft. Then you probably have a strain of what is commonly referred to as "St Augustine Grass". This grass will become weakened if it gets cut too short. The ideal length is 3 1/2 inches tall once it's been cut. This type of grass cannot be seeded and if part of it dies you will need to plant some patches which will create runner to join the other parts of the lawn.
Bahia grass is more like a pasture grass and feels much more gentler under your feet. It can tolerate a lack of water or a drought better than St Augustine but rarely gives you that carpet of green as nice as St Augustine does.
Watering
It's best to only water these a couple of times per week. The best time of day to set your sprinklers to is 5am. The reason for this is the ground should be at it's coolest and the landscaping will be able to make the most effective use of the water it has received.
If you find your lawn looking patchy and odd holes or brownish spots here and or there. Look at the area surrounding the dead spots, are these nice and green? If so, you may need to change a sprinkler head out as it may have busted or it simply might not reach that area and you may need a larger one.
Feed & Weed
Feeding and weeding your greenery should happen at least a couple of times per year. Preferable it should receive a treatment every other month. Once it's been sprayed it needs to be watered in within a day or the chemical you've treated it with will "Burn", the lawn. So, schedule your treatments with the allowed watering days in your neighborhood.
Weeds....it's very important that you don't pull them out alive. The spores will spread all over the garden and where you had one now you'll have at least six more. The best way to control weeds is to spray them with round up wait a week until they are dead and then gently pull them out and dispose of them.
If your lawn becomes infected with chinch bugs or mole crickets it can die within a 2/3 weeks. So, it's important to be on the look out for these types of bugs and regular spraying will keep them to a minimum and your lawn healthy.
If your plants and bushes look "brownish". This is due to a lack of water. If they look yellow this is due to a lack of food. So, you'll either need to add some more watering to the schedule or plan for it to be sprayed with a good weed and feed.
Mulch
Mulching usually happens in the spring we prefer November/December,and you'll find you need to top up your mulch on a yearly basis. Our reasons for mulching in the winter are simple. When your mulch is several inches thick it will afford your delicate tropical plants a little more warmth and protection against the cold weather! The rain simply washes mulch away and that's why it needs to be refreshed yearly. This can be minimized with the installation of gutters or using rubber mulch.
